Some unsuccessful people have incredibly high opinions of themselves. So, it seems to me that there is no real secret to success — well not one that anyone else can copy, at least. Every individual has the potential to be both successful and unsuccessful, depending on the unique choices that they make.

Having said that, however, I was intrigued by some recent thinking from the Financial Times IE Business School Corporate Learning Alliance on some attributes that may have a bearing on success. Many people are unwilling to take major risks for fear of losing their jobs. Of course it does. Luck influences where we are born, what access to education we have, who we marry, how healthy we are and what opportunities present themselves to us.

Family support. Ability to do dull work… for years. Improve and get better. They need to have confidence to voice their ideas.
Children need to know that they can get better and can imagine how they will feel, what things will be like when they taste success. If you visualise something so strongly — your brain will work hard to make it happen. Getting the Vision right can be very powerful. However, some children are put off because the distance to cover can look too great- and so just give up.
What we need to do is to help them imagine small steps and aspire to get a bit better each week. Opportunities to try things out and get better.
This needs to be built in consistently over time. To be successful you need to communicate and cooperate with others. They are good at listening to others, sharing ideas and making compromises. They can reflect on their work and actions. We need to teach our children about group dynamics, how to communicate and work with others productively. Even successful people suffer rejection and criticism. Children need to bounce back- they need to have self worth and self belief.
